Competition to commemorate Roland Eötvös
The Roland Eötvös Physical Society and the Institute for Computer Science and Control announced a literacy competition for secondary school students |
Roland Eötvös physicist, geophysicist, professor, president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences died on 8th of April 1919. 2019 was therefore declared – in co-operation with UNESCO – as a commemoration year, and abundantly filled with a series of programs by Hungarian and international professional institutions. One of the programs was the Literacy Competition organized for secondary school students with the aim of familiarizing the public with the life and professional activities of Roland Eötvös. The participants not only had to answer questions and solve puzzles related to natural sciences, but in the fields of history and literature, as well.
The competition was opened for teams of 4 aggregated from 9th grade and older students coming from domestic schools and from the neighboring countries. Several teams could be entered from the same school and had complete all the tasks in Hungarian.
The competition consisted of 2 rounds. The first round covered several subsections, with every section running for a week, starting on Friday, and finishing next Thursday. The web page of the competition announced information to help the preparation for the tasks of the given week always on Friday, and the participants had 2 days to solve the tasks online, next Wednesday and Thursday. The teams that successfully reached the second round participated in the complex final competition, in person.

“FÖCIK” – Competition in Geography and Earth Sciences for the Carpathian Basin
The competition was announced by the Civil Association in Earth Sciences (“FÖCIK”). |
The competition is announced every year by the member associations of “FÖCIK” for subjects in Geography and Geology for students in 9th – 13th grade of Hungarian secondary schools within Hungary and in the neighboring countries. The competition is organized in Hungarian, for all students in one category. “FÖCIK” prepares joint worksheets for all online rounds and the finals, based on predefined resources and curricula of secondary schools.
The contest comprises 3 online rounds (topics in “Values of Inanimate World” – Every object matters; This scenery is more than a Map; Wonderful landscapes of the Carpathian Basin) and 2 final rounds with presence in person (Semifinal and Final).

The contests entitled „Heading the Space!” were organized by the Hungarian Association for Astronomy (“MANT”) with the support of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs during the school years 2020/21 and 2021/22. The contests comprised 3 rounds in areas related to space research, for teams of secondary schools in Hungary and in the neighboring countries.
